In the first decade of the 21st century, film score composer Theodore Shapiro (aka Teddy Shapiro) became the go-to guy for movie comedies starring the major comic actors of the time, including Ben Stiller, Will Farrell, and Owen Wilson. He was born Theodore Michael Shapiro on September 29, 1971, in Washington, D.C., and earned a B.A. in music from Brown University, then a masters from the Juilliard School of Music. In 1993, he scored episodes of the television series The State. His first film score came with the crime drama Hurricane Streets in 1998; his first comedy was Safe Men later that same year. In 1999, he scored the comedy Six Ways to Sunday and the boxing documentary On the Ropes (along with Ray “Web” Davis). The drama Restaurant was released in early 2000, followed that year by the adventure film Prince of Central Park; another film taking boxing as its subject, Girlfight; and, at the end of the year, the David Mamet comedy State and Main. In 2001, Shapiro scored Wet Hot American Summer, Heist, and Not Another Teen Movie. His only film of 2002 was Love in the Time of Money, but in 2003 he had two comedy scores, Old School (with Luke Wilson, Will Farrell, and Vince Vaughn) and View from the Top. No less than four comedies followed in 2004: Along Came Polly (Ben Stiller, Jennifer Aniston); Starsky & Hutch (Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn); 13 Going on 30; and Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn). In 2005, Shapiro scored the comedies The Baxter and Fun with Dick and Jane (Jim Carrey), and in 2006 the comedies The Devil Wears Prada; You, Me and Dupree (Owen Wilson); and Idiocracy (Luke Wilson). Bug, released in early 2007, was more of a drama than a comedy, but Blades of Glory (Will Farrell), which followed shortly, was played for laughs; Shapiro also scored Mr. Woodcock and The Girl in the Park that year. His three movies of 2008 were Semi-Pro (Will Farrell), Tropic Thunder (Ben Stiller, Jack Black), and Marley & Me (Owen Wilson, Jennifer Aniston), and in 2009 he had I Love You, Man, The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, and Year One (Jack Black).

They are unstoppable and their fans insatiable, so the show must go on! And while there is already so much archived Rolling Stones material, this bit, released in Autumn 2018, is definitely worth a listen. Recorded in November 1994 at the Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami, Voodoo Lounge Uncut documents the tour that followed the studio album Voodoo Lounge released in July that same year. By the book, unsurprising, but effective as always with the Jagger/Richards combination. The shows are outright outrageous and are filled with pure, hard-core rock’n’roll. It’s stripped bare, no frills, and it sounds loud and clear. Even for their hit songs that have been heard a million times such as Satisfaction, Sympathy For The Devil, Street Fighting Man, Start Me Up, It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll, Brown Sugar, Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Miss You and Honky Tonk Women, the Stones give it their all. They even invited three special guests to their electric fiesta: Sheryl Crow (Live With Me), Robert Cray (Stop Breakin’ Down Blues) and Bo Diddley (Who Do You Love?). Once again: it’s only rock’n’roll but we like it, we like it, yes we do! – Max Dembo

French psych duo The Liminanas release their new album I’ve Got Trouble In Mind Vol. 2 through Because Music. Featuring rare recordings, 7″ singles and unreleased material, the collection is the follow up to 2014’s album I’ve Got Trouble In Mind. Hailing from Perpignan, the duo straddles the boundary between psych, shoegaze, and yé-yé. With hazy, reverb-laden hooks, combined at times with noisy distortion, and fronted by effortlessly cool vocals, reminiscent of Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot, the band is at once timeless and quintessentially French. The Limiñanas, who have produced records in their own garage for the last ten years, released their first rarities collection I’ve Got Trouble in Mind through Bill and Lisa Roe’s revered ‘Trouble In Mind’ label in 2014. As with the first installation, ‘Vol. 2′ features rare and unreleased tracks such as the duo’s version of The Kinks’ Two Sisters (recorded for a Mpjo magazine covermount compilation, produced by Anton Newcombe and remixed by Jim Diamond (White Stripes/The Sonics), a cover of The Lords of the New Church’s Russian Roulette and live versions of fan’s favourites.

The Gibson Brothers, the sibling duo comprised of Eric and Leigh Gibson, have already made over a dozen albums, but none are quite like the new Dan Auerbach produced Mockingbird. The duo has received several awards throughout their long career, including International Bluegrass Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year, Song of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, and Album of the Year. Their newest venture, Mockingbird, showcases an effortless blend of classic 70’s infused rock and timeless country, a modern twist on their traditional bluegrass sound, and harmonies that will keep you wishing for more.

Bang, Bang introduced a hard rocker whose eclecticism was both impressive and unnervingly inconsistent. The covers of “Season of the Witch” and “Summertime Blues” are overlong and dated, but the frenetic version of Cher’s “Bang, Bang” is inspired, and the rendition of Gene Pitney’s “Something’s Gotten Hold of My Heart” shows his poppier roots. Over half of the material was penned by Reid, and while these compositions are sometimes generic, late-’60s hard rockers, he also shows a facility for Donavonesque folk-rock “(“Sweater””) and impressive soul-rock vocalizing (“When I Get Home”). Originally not released in the U.K., it’s ironically only available now as a U.K. import.

Holiday Spirits is the debut studio album by the men’s a cappella singing group Straight No Chaser.
If the phrase “male a cappella group” conjures up an image of students in blue blazers, ties, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses… think again. Straight No Chaser are neither straight-laced nor straight-faced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. Originally formed a dozen years ago while students together at Indiana University, the group has reassembled and reemerged after their video for ‘The 12 Days of Christmas’ became a phenomenon with almost 8 million views on YouTube. In an era when so much pop music is the product of digital processing and vocal pro-tooling, Straight No Chaser is the real deal – the captivating sound of ten unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense… and with a sense of humor.

Stonewall Jackson was one of the most popular country stars of the early ’60s, scoring a string of Top Ten country hits and becoming a fixture at the Grand Ole Opry with a pleading voice that seemed to reflect his hard, often abusive upbringing on a south Georgia dirt farm. He was named after the Confederate general Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, to whom he was related according to family legend. When he was ten he traded his bike for a guitar and began making up songs. Some of his later hits, such as “Don’t Be Angry,” were written very early in his creative life. Jackson began singing professionally in the mid-’50s, moving to Nashville in 1956. Within a few days of his arrival he delivered an unsolicited demonstration recording to the offices of the Acuff-Rose publishing house, and executive Wesley Rose heard his recorded singing and set up an audition for Jackson at the Grand Ole Opry. He became the first entertainer to join the Opry without a recording contract, performing first on the Opry’s Friday Night Frolics before his official debut. Backed by Ernest Tubb’s Texas Troubadours, he proved so popular that the audience demanded four encores.

Stan Rogers was the quintessential folk balladeer of the Great Lakes and Canada in the Seventies and Eighties…or at least it seemed so to me, having discovered his music so soon before his tragic death in the early Eighties. This CD is chock full of examples of what made him a great influence on the generation to come.
